Chris Cummins is the president and chief portrait artist of Portraits By Christopher.
Chris is an artist with more than 25 years of portraiture experience. He began his career as a photography student in high school, earned a college degree in photography at the University of Missouri and worked as a photojournalist for a variety of publications around the country.
In 2003, Chris chose to return to the Kansas City area and start his own portrait studio. Chris has been a full-time professional portrait artist ever since.
Chris’ work seeks to combine photographic portraiture with the timeless artistry of classical painting. His clients respond to his attention to detail. They also enjoy his warm and inviting approach which helps them and their family feel confident and comfortable in front of the camera. Chris loves children and will act like a total goofball to help them give their best for a session.
At Portraits By Christopher, the photograph is just the starting point. Your portrait is treated as part photograph and part classical art. Using the image as a beginning reference an artist will carefully mix colors and brushes to create textures and strokes throughout the image.
This creates a combination painting and photographic image that has both the life-like appearance of a photographic portrait and the classical beauty of traditional painted works.

Strauss Peyton was established in 1908 by Benjamin R Strauss and Homer K. Peyton and is considered one of the oldest photography studios in the country. The first portraits included celebrities and public figures like Harry Truman, Douglas MacArthur, FDR, Bette Davis, Fred Astaire and Charlie Chaplin, just to name a few. The list of people who had their portrait made at the Strauss Peyton Studio back then and more recently is of famous, influential and bigger than life personalities.
